Symphony 3.0 beta now available

As promised at Lotusphere, the beta of Lotus Symphony 3.0 is now available on symphony.lotus.com...

Key new features in Symphony 3.0:

  • VB Macros support
  • ODF 1.2 support for improved file interoperability
  • embedded audio/video allows users to add media directly to slides, documents and sheets
  • autotext support to create "chunks" of text that are used frequently and quickly inserted
  • digital signatures
  • redline support  --- shows edits made to document
  • usability enhancements

I know some are asking, "What happened to Symphony 2.0?"  The answer is, since this new release is aligned with the OpenOffice 3.x codebase, we chose to move the version number up to alignment.  Symphony 3.0 is going to be exciting and further help liberate IT organizations from paying high Microsoft taxes -- get started now by downloading the beta and providing feedback.

Ed Brill: Notes/Domino 8.5.1 available in first set of languages today

As of this morning, Notes/Domino 8.5.1 international editions are available in French, Italian, Spanish, German, Catalan, Chinese-Traditional and Simplified, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese-Brazilian, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch, and Finnish.  The remaining languages should come in about 45-50 days.

IBM - Allowing diagnostic data to be sent to IBM

When the IBM Lotus Notes client (Basic configuration) or IBM Lotus Domino server is restarted after a server crash, diagnostic information about the crash is collected from the Notes System Diagnostics (NSD) file, and other files. This feature is enabled by default for the Notes client, and you can enable it on the Domino server.
Release: Notes/Domino 8.02 and 8.5

Ubuntu 8.10 und Notes 8.5 auf dem ACER AspireOne

[Nachtrag aus meinem alten Blog: Eintrag vom 20.01.2009]

Als noch releativ neuer, aber schon bekennender Ubuntu-Anhänger war ich schnell begeistert über das Erscheinen des Lotus Notes 8.5 Standard-Clients für Ubuntu. Also habe ich kurz entschlossen auf meinem AspireOne neben WindowsXP zusätzlich Ubuntu 8.04.1 Desktop ("Hardy Heron") eingerichtet und das Notes 8.5-DEB installiert. Was soll ich sagen - alles läuft perfekt!

Aber wie das so ist, wenn die Begeisterung keine Grenzen kennt: schon am nächsten Tag habe ich Hardy Heron auf die aktuelle Ubuntu 8.10, den unerschrockenen Steinbock ("Intrepid Ibex"), upgedated - diese hat ja neben vielen Neuerungen und Verbesserungen auch WLAN-Unterstützung für den AspireOne.... Nachdem nach dem Update überhaupt kein LAN mehr funktionierte (weder Kabel noch WLAN), habe ich die 8.10 neu installiert, danach mit dem Packetmanager "Synaptic" die gewünschten zusätzlichen Pakete eingebunden (u.a. Adobe Flash Player 10, jetzt werden auch mit Firefox eingebettete Flashs korrekt dargestellt und abgespielt). Zum Schluss, wie schon bei Hardy Heron, den Notes 8.5 Client installiert. Auch das lief problemlos, bis auf einen  Schönheitsfehler, der, wenn er nicht behebbar sein sollte, für mich ein KO-Kriterium wäre: auf der Kachelwand (Arbeitsbereich/Workspace) werden keine Texte auf den Kacheln und auf den Reitern dargestellt.

Das Problem scheint auf jeden Fall bereits bekannt zu sein, sowohl in diversen Foren aus auch bei IBM, allerdings bisher ohne Lösung, die bei mir funktioniert ;-(
